Making boring financial results accessible

The problem

Insurance group IAG wanted to communicate its half-year results to internal employees in a memorable way. The company wanted to step away from the customary financial report, dense with facts and figures, and create a compelling infographic that would allow readers easily to absorb key results and highlights.

The strategy

How do you create a visually compelling piece of communication that still communicates lots of data? It’s a challenge we have embraced many times in the well over 100 infographics we’ve now produced. In this instance we presented three concepts, based on IAG’s new branding, and agreed on an approach that we believed would allow employees to understand – at a glance – IAG’s performance.

The solution

Working with IAG, we distilled a large amount of information, transforming the company’s half-year result into a single poster-sized infographic with six sections – company overview, financial performance, customers, shareholders, employees and the community. Additionally, we created four animated GIFs from the initial infographic for distribution on IAG’s social media channel. Each of these focused on a different stakeholder – customer, shareholder, employee and community.

The success

The infographic was launched to employees in February 2016 to coincide with IAG’s announcement to shareholders. By presenting it as a single infographic and four bite-sized GIFs employees were able to understand the results at a glance, and share the GIFs easily. The Half Year report has been visited and shared many times.
