What was your first job?
A pimply store detective. I’d finished my national service in South Africa and got a gig as a floor-walker while I tried to get a job as a cadet reporter on a newspaper – which I eventually did.
What makes people good at their job?
The grit of experience, attention to detail, raw talent and, above all, enthusiasm. You can’t buy it and you can’t bottle it.
What do you do when you’re not at work?
Spend time with my family, cycle, walk my dogs, watch birds (the feathered kind), drink good beer and follow rugby union obsessively.
